Why would you bother calling a professional when you can just rent a portable carpet cleaning machine from the store or buy one and do it yourself? Not only is that less of a hassle because you don't have to call and schedule someone to clean but you can do it on your own time. It will also save you more money, right?

Machines

Have you ever seen the machine that a quality professional carpet cleaner uses to clean carpets? They can be really big! If you want to talk prices, lets do that. The Rug Doctor retails for about $250. Machines that a pro will use can range from $2000 to $35000. That is a bit of a price difference. Then one should think that the results will be quite a bit better with the bigger machine. One might answer this by saying they'll find a professional machine, rent it, and do the job themselves. The price to rent one can cost as much as buying a rug doctor, then you still must do the work.

Heat

Have you ever washed the dishes or your hands with cold water versus doing it with warm or hot water? Its easier to clean and rinse with the hot water instead of cold or warm, right? Also, the hotter the water, the faster it dries. There is a big difference regarding heat between machines. A rental or store-bought machine can only use water that is as hot as what will come out of the tap. Most professional portables have a built-in water heater that will heat that tap water even hotter. On that note, truck mounted machines will create the hottest water, getting it close to steam (thus the term "steam cleaning").

Pressure

Most rentals or store-bought machines use a pump that will deliver the water into the carpet at 25 to 40 psi. Truck mounted, or professional portable machines can exceed 1000 psi, although carpets should only be cleaned with a psi of 250 to 500 depending on machine and cleaning technique. We can compare this to the difference between washing your car with a garden hose instead of a pressure washer. Its easier to remove the dirt with the higher pressure.

Knowledge

Cleaning the carpet must be easy, right? Fill the tank with water, soap and start cleaning the room. Have you considered what type of carpet you have? Is it nylon, wool or polyester? How much area do you need to clean? What type of soap should you buy and use? If you can't answer these questions properly, you may do your carpet more harm than good. This can potentially cost you more money down the road. Certified carpet cleaners will be able to answer these questions and more. They will be able to identify each unique situation and do the job properly.

Products

The products you can buy off the shelf are nowhere near as strong as professional grade carpet cleaners products. This means they may not be as effective as what a professional will be able to use. A lot of shelf products are soap based, whereas a professional cleaner's products are usually soap free and free rinsing. This will leave less residue behind and reduce the chances of rapid re-soiling.

So rather than to do it yourself, does it not seem easier to spend a little more money and have it done professionally.
